Why Does My Crawl Space Smell? Common Causes in Tulsa Homes
Why the Smell Gets Upstairs
Air in a house moves upward. As warm air rises and leaves through the attic and upper floors, air is pulled in from below, including from the crawl space. That is why a crawl space problem often shows up as a smell in closets, bedrooms or the hallway, especially on humid days.
Musty or Earthy Smell
This is the most common. It usually means moisture and mold or mildew: humid air through open vents, damp soil with no ground cover, wet insulation or mold on joists. In Tulsa it is often worst in late summer. The fix is cleaning any mold and controlling moisture with a vapor barrier or encapsulation.
Sewer Smell
A sewage or rotten-egg odor points to a plumbing problem: a cracked drain line, a loose cleanout or a dry trap. This needs a plumber, and any contaminated soil or insulation should be removed.
Dead Animal Smell
A strong, sweet, decaying odor usually means a rodent or other animal died under the house. Remove the animal, clean the area and seal vents and gaps to keep others out.
Other Causes
- Standing water after storms
- Dryer vents exhausting into the crawl space
- Rotting wood from long-term moisture
- Old, wet insulation with pest debris
- Mold on the underside of the subfloor
- Stagnant air in sealed spaces without a dehumidifier
What to Do Next
Place a hygrometer in the crawl space for a few days. If humidity stays above 60 percent, moisture is the likely culprit. Have the space inspected so the cause is identified before money is spent. See our crawl space mold removal page for more.
